Coinbase hit by data breach after bribed support agents expose customer details
Coinbase disclosed on May 15, 2025, that a group of cybercriminals had stolen sensitive customer information such as names, birthdates, and partial Social Security numbers by bribing external customer‐support agents. The attackers demanded a $20 million ransom to keep the data from being publicly released, but Coinbase refused to pay and has terminated the involved personnel while cooperating with law enforcement. Importantly, no passwords, two‐factor codes, private keys, or customer funds were compromised in the breach.
