U.S. Government moves 17,733 BTC onchain

Two heavy stories hit BTC, security fears following AI math breakthroughs and US onchain moves of more than 17.7k BTC to Coinbase. Most of these coins are likely not sold, and for now, nothing suggests that AI has weakened elliptic-curve cryptography.

U.S. govt moves between 17.7k and 21.5k BTC
The US government moved about 17.7k BTC to Coinbase Prime this week, including a 12,267 BTC lot tied to the Bitfinex hack. That brought labelled holdings down from 324,527 to 306,795 BTC. Counting unlabelled wallets that look government-held, about 21.5k BTC reached Coinbase Prime. The coins went through test sends, one-time addresses and sweeps into deposit addresses.Most of this is probably not selling. Coinbase Prime has been the Marshals’ custodian since 2024, so a transfer there is a custody step. The Bitfinex coins are tied up in a claims process, and the DOJ wants them returned in BTC. The Strategic Bitcoin Reserve no-sell order only covers fully forfeited coins while allowing returns to victims. 1.2k coins from FTX and HashFlare where on the move this week, which may be sold as victims may be paid in cash through remission. They moved through the same deposit address as the Bitfinex coins, which points to the Marshals’ own account.
