Executive summary

  • 2.5 million people in the Nordics own cryptocurrency, equating to 11.1% of the adult population. Nordic crypto ownership grew by 326,000 owners in the past year.
  • A particularly striking finding from this year’s survey is how far crypto adoption has come among younger adults. More young Nordics now own crypto than directly own stocks, with roughly 1.53 million crypto owners compared to 0.94 million equity owners in comparable age groups.
  • While most crypto owners remain young, we are seeing clear signs of maturation, with the largest growth in 2025 coming from adults aged 40–49.
  • Only 23% of Nordic crypto owners are female, with ownership rates of 17.1% among men and 5.2% among women, highlighting a persistent gender gap.
  • A meaningful share of the Nordic population has owned crypto in the past but no longer does. 6.8% of Norwegians, 7.4% of Swedes, 7.3% of Danes, and 9.2% of Finns report having exited the market. In Norway, the most common reason for selling is profit realization, while in the rest of the Nordics the dominant explanations are loss of belief in crypto or realizing losses.
  • Adding past and current ownership, we estimate that 17–21% of the Nordic population has experience with crypto, either through owning or having owned digital assets.
  • The number of Nordic crypto owners is set to grow. Survey responses indicate that 25% of the population expects to own crypto within 10 years, implying up to 5.7 million owners by 2036.
  • A majority of Nordic crypto investors still hold relatively small positions, with most owning less than $1,000 in crypto. Despite this, we estimate total Nordic crypto wealth at $25.8bn, or 1.1% of the global crypto market cap.

Nordic Comparison

  • Sweden has the highest crypto ownership rate in the Nordics and also the largest number of crypto owners, overtaking Norway as the regional leader.
  • Demographics among crypto owners remain similar across the Nordic countries. Crypto owners tend to be young and male, though adoption among older cohorts is increasing, gradually narrowing the age gap.
  • There are notable gender differences across the Nordics, but the gap remains wide in all countries. Sweden now leads in both relative ownership rates and absolute number of crypto owners across both genders.
  • Future adoption expectations have declined across most of the Nordics compared to last year. Sweden stands out as the exception, with a growing share of the population expecting to buy crypto within the next decade, while expectations have fallen in Norway, Denmark, and Finland.
  • There are clear differences in how people access crypto markets across the Nordics. Norwegians and Finns are most likely to use local exchanges, Danes rely more on international exchanges, while Swedes stand out for their high usage of exchange-traded products (ETPs).
